How to Pack a Backpack
Packing a backpack seems like somewhat of a mystery. So many different opinions on what is the best way to pack your stuff. Everyone has their own best way that is better than all others, but the reality is everyone is different.
The issues for most people are listed below.
Packing Advice For Backpacking
How much should I take travelling?
This question is a difficult one to answer because it has so many variables. It all depends on where you're going, for how long, when you are going, how big is your backpack, what will the weather be like at the time.
That's why we at SiXNOMADS developed an online app called What To Take that uses all that information and tells you exactly what to take for your trip.
How much can I take?
How much you can take again depends on the same variables as mentioned in question 1. The What To Take app not only tells you what items to bring but also how many of each of them.
Where do I put my shoes?
The most important thing you should do with your shoes is make sure that they are contained. This can be achieved by either putting them in their own compartment, or putting them inside plastic bags with your other stuff. We believe the best place to your shoes is in the bottom, which on most backpacks is it's own 10/15l compartment. This should usually be big enough for 2/3 pairs of shoes.
Where do I put my dirty clothes?
Your smelly clothes must be kept separate from your clean clothes. You can either use a compartment solely for dirty clothes or put them in a wash bag/plastic bag with your main stuff. However, the materials for wash bags don't usually contain the stench, so your other clothes will get smelly too.
With our Smart Pack all you need to do is keep your dirty clothes in your main compartment and put the Smart Pack on top of them with your nice clean clothes inside.
Where do I put my toiletries and gadgets?
These are the items that you'll be using multiple times per day, they need to be easily accessible. The pocket in most backpacks at the top is perfectly sized and shaped for most toiletry bags. Your gadgets may be items that you wouldn't like to leave open in your accommodation, so we'd recommend keeping those close to you in your day pack. For inexpensive items like chargers (well, relatively inexpensive) you should keep them in the side pockets. They're long, usually quite big and are easily accessed.
How do I organise the clothes in my backpack?
Organising your clothes is the hardest problem on this list. There's so many ways to do it. At SiXNOMADS, we noticed all of these issues. Finding clothes in your backpack is a nightmare.
